Registered Names
The requirements for the names carried by a registration.
Scope and authority
This Standard governs the names a registration carries. It is issued by The Reptile Club and applies to every species the Registry accepts.
An animal's registered name appears on the permanent public record and on the Certificate of Pedigree. It may also appear on any certificate that lists the animal in its recorded lineage. The name used privately for an animal does not have to be its registered name.
The same requirements apply to every name the Registry prints: the animal's registered name, a breeder name, and a name entered for an unregistered parent in a lineage slot. A change to any of these must meet this Standard. How a breeder name is claimed and approved is governed by Pedigree Terms and Lineage Documentation.
Requirements
Names may not contain profanity, obscenity, slurs, explicit sexual references, threats, degrading insults, or language that harasses or humiliates an identifiable person or group.
An explicit sexual reference refers directly to a sexual act, object, or service. A name that only hints or suggests is not prohibited.
The Registry reads the complete name the way an ordinary reader would. A technical or species-specific meaning counts when it genuinely applies.
The Registry may also decline a name that is clearly unsuitable for a permanent public record. This is done rarely, and the reason is recorded.
Review
When a name does not meet this Standard, the registration is neither approved nor denied on that account. The reviewer asks for a different name, and review continues once it arrives.
The credit stays held through review and is spent only when the registration is approved. If the registration is not approved, the credit returns to the wallet.
Revisions
The Club revises this Standard as the Registry's practice develops. Each revision states its date and what it changed.
August 2026. Adopted the Registered Names Standard.
